Service information
The OECD 437: Bovine Corneal Opacity and Permeability Test (BCOP) is an ex vivo method using cows’ eye corneas to determine test chemicals (substances or mixtures) that require classification or labelling in accordance with GHS. Test chemicals are exposed to corneas, enabling categorisation using the LLBO irritancy score.
The OECD 437 BCOP test has been validated, and laboratory proficiency under OECD 437 has been established at Scantox. Services are available in both GLP and non-GLP formats.
OECD guideline | OECD 437 |
What is being assessed | Potential for eye irritation and serious eye damage and GHS classification and labelling |
Why is this important | Determination of chemicals that require, and those are not require, classification or labelling for eye irritaton and damage is an important aspect of chemical risk assessment and registration. |
Test System | Bovine cornea from commercial meat processing Opacity: light transmission through cornea, quantified using opacimeter Permeability: contracts dye penetration of corneal layers. |
Test Item Requirements | 5 g / 5 ml |
